Craft Based Design Project is an initiative taken by National Institute of Fashion Technology that aims on learning the working, process, essence of the craft, various influences on the craft, the life of artisans, the reasons of their downfall, role of government in their development, making them aware of the market trends and also letting us develop our designs with respect to the cluster. This module includes the documentation of the data and the detailed research study of the Chanderi craft cluster and to design product collections using Chanderi fabric while incorporating design innovations. The objective of this project "Craft Based Design Project", was to use design as a means of intervening in a textile tradition and, to study the existing system at Chanderi
weaving society and to restore the faith in weavers in handloom weaving.
Inspiration- The inspiration has been taken from the historic monuments of Bhopal- the city of Lakes. Monuments like Sadar manzil, Minto hall, Gauhar Mahal, Moti Masjid etc. are the major sources of inspiration. Highlights and details of the monuments like the structures, carvings and silhouette are the roots for motif derivation.

•The enchanted handloom craft Cluster “ Chanderi’’ particularly famous for its fabric, famous for its sheer texture and transparency . Although complex  in the matter  of production and involving numerous processes , each creation is individualistic  and localised in its appeal . The tools that produce these handicrafts cannot be compared against spectacular structures or noisy machines, but the resulting artifacts speak with silent and subtle beauty.
Weaving technique used is "Extra weft technique" and plain weave. There are
two types of loom arrangements used in Chanderi weaving. One is Jacquard
and the othe is Naka. This collection is made using Naka weaving.
The fabric is made in silk by cotton weave. The warp is silk and the weft is
mercerised cotton. The motifs are woven in mercerised cotton and zari.
